A question keeps coming up in host groups: "Has anyone received the free photo shoot offered to some hosts by Airbnb?"
The offer is real. It is also narrower than it sounds, and a few details are worth knowing before you say yes. This page walks through how it works, how to prepare, and what to check first, with numbered references in brackets that jump to the full list at the end.
The short version
- Invitation only: Airbnb runs a limited-time, invitation-only offer of free professional photography. You can only take part if you received an invitation for a specific listing.1
- Optional: declining has no stated effect on your listing.1
- Usually paid: photography from Airbnb has not always been free, and for most hosts today it is a paid service.2, 4
- No stated criteria: Airbnb does not say how it chooses who gets invited, so an invitation is not proof that your current photos are poor.1
- No city list: there is no public list of cities. Availability depends on whether Airbnb has a freelance photographer near you.1, 2
Free, then paid, now free by invitation
The amber entry is the offer this page is about.
- 2010The photography program begins. Airbnb's photography program dates back to 2010.1
- 2011Any host can request a photographer at no cost. The program opens up widely, and Airbnb reports that it has already photographed around 13,000 properties across more than 100 countries.3
- Today · the standard programPaid. You request a shoot, Airbnb matches you with a freelance photographer, and the cost is taken out of your next payout. Airbnb does not publish a price list. Hosts report paying anywhere from about $100 to $400 depending on location and property size.2, 4
- Today · targeted offersFree by invitation. Free shoots still exist, but as targeted promotions. Airbnb sends invitations to selected hosts for selected listings, with an expiry date attached. Its own help page says that not every listing qualifies for free photography, though anyone can pay for a session.1
The free offer and the paid program side by side
| Free offer (by invitation) | Standard paid program | |

| How you get it | An invitation for a specific listing, sent through the contact details on your Airbnb account1 | You request a shoot, or email photography@airbnb.com for a quote2 |
| What it costs | Nothing, if the invitation is genuine. Get that confirmed in writing (see check 2 below) | Taken out of your next payout. No published price list; hosts report about $100 to $4002, 4 |
| Photographer | A local freelance photographer, subject to availability near your listing1 | A freelance photographer that Airbnb matches you with2 |
| Who qualifies | Selected hosts and listings. Not every listing qualifies1 | Any host who pays, where Airbnb has a photographer available1, 2 |
| Limits | The offer expires and cannot be moved to a different listing1 | One professional shoot per listing, and it is not refundable once it has started2 |
Does an invitation mean your photos are bad?
This is the question most hosts quietly worry about, and the evidence does not support a firm answer.
Airbnb's stated reason is simply that it wants to help hosts refresh their photo gallery as part of its wider effort to improve listings. It gives no selection criteria.1
On Airbnb's community forum, some hosts have guessed that invitations go to listings that look like they need help.6 Others report getting the offer for unrelated reasons, including as a goodwill gesture when the Airbnb Plus program was wound down.5 Neither explanation is confirmed by Airbnb.
How the free shoot works
- Accept through the invitation link. You will be asked to agree to Airbnb's photography terms and suggest some dates.1
- Get matched. Airbnb looks for a local freelance photographer. Once one accepts, you are introduced in an Airbnb message thread.1
- Schedule directly with the photographer. Allow one to two weeks to find a date that works for both of you. Confirm the day before.1
- Prepare the space. More on this below.
- The shoot happens. You do not have to be there, as long as the photographer can get in and knows what you want captured.1
- Photos go live. Edited photos are uploaded to your listing automatically, usually within about a week.1
If you need to cancel or move the date, give at least 48 hours' notice. Airbnb warns that rescheduling more than once can cost you the offer.1
Getting the space ready
The photographer is there to shoot, not to style. They may straighten a cushion, but the property needs to be photo-ready when they arrive.1
Outside
- Move cars away from the driveway and the front of the property.
- Put bins, hoses and anything else untidy out of sight.
- Clear the paths leading to the entrance.
Inside
- Open curtains and blinds. Airbnb's house style relies on natural light, so lights and screens are switched off.
- Clean the surfaces that show up most on camera: floors, windows, mirrors.
- Declutter, straighten the furniture and make the beds properly.
- Put away personal items and anything you would not want a stranger to see.
- In bathrooms, lower the toilet seat and pull the shower curtain back.
What you get
Expect two to three photos per room, plus some exterior shots, edited to Airbnb's style.1, 2
Two things surprise hosts here:
Where is it available?
Airbnb does not publish a list of eligible cities or countries. It says only that it has freelance photographers in many cities worldwide, and that free sessions are offered first come, first served, subject to photographer availability near the listing.1, 2
In practice, the invitation itself is the signal. If you did not get one, you can still check whether the paid service covers your area through Airbnb's professional photography page, or email photography@airbnb.com for a quote.2
Four checks before you accept
- Make sure the invitation is real. Airbnb says the offer is sent through the contact details on your Airbnb account. Open the offer from inside your Airbnb account rather than from a forwarded link, and never pay or share login details to "claim" it.1
- Get the price in writing. At least one host on the community forum reported having $229 deducted after being promised a free shoot. Ask support to confirm in the message thread that there is no charge, and check your next payout.5
- Read the usage terms. The photos are covered by a separate set of photography terms. One host was told by support that the images cannot be used for commercial promotion outside Airbnb, which matters if you also list on other platforms or run your own booking site.1, 5
- Check your timing. The offer expires and cannot be moved to a different listing. Airbnb's paid program is limited to one professional shoot per listing, so if you are about to renovate or refurnish, weigh that against the deadline.1, 2
Is it worth doing?
Airbnb's own analysis of more than 14,700 listings found that those with its professional photography earned 21% more on average over the following year, and took 19% more bookings, than those without. Treat that as Airbnb's figure rather than a promise. The company itself says results vary and are not guaranteed.1
Airbnb's Reported Lift From Professional Photography
Average difference over the following 365 days between listings that used Airbnb Professional Photography and listings that did not, from Airbnb's analysis of more than 14,700 listings.
Source: Airbnb Help Center.1 Airbnb's own analysis, not an independent study. Airbnb measures both figures as a difference in dollar value, over one year between 2024 and 2025. It says earnings, bookings and nightly-rate increases vary by listing and that the figures are not guaranteed results.
The stronger argument is the low downside. A free shoot costs you a morning of cleaning, your old photos remain, and you can remove any new image you dislike.1
Frequently asked questions
Is Airbnb's free photo shoot offer real?
Yes, but it is narrower than it sounds. It is a limited-time, invitation-only offer: you can only take part if you received an invitation for a specific listing. Photography from Airbnb has not always been free, and for most hosts today it is a paid service.
Does an invitation mean my photos are bad?
Not necessarily. Airbnb does not say how it chooses who gets invited, and its stated reason is that it wants to help hosts refresh their photo gallery. Some hosts guess that invitations go to listings that look like they need help, and others report getting one for unrelated reasons. Airbnb has confirmed neither explanation.
Can I approve the photos before they go live?
No. Edited photos are uploaded to your listing automatically, usually within about a week. None of your existing photos are removed, and you can reorder or remove the new ones whenever you like.
Which cities is the free photo shoot available in?
Airbnb does not publish a list of eligible cities or countries. Free sessions are first come, first served and depend on whether Airbnb has a freelance photographer near your listing, so the invitation itself is the signal.
Is the free photo shoot worth accepting?
The downside is low: it costs you a morning of preparation, your old photos stay in place, and you can remove any new image you dislike. Airbnb reports that listings with its professional photography earned 21% more on average over the following year, but that is Airbnb's own figure and not a guarantee. Confirm there is no charge, read the usage terms, and make sure the photos show the property as it is.
Photos Get the Click. The Rest of the Listing Has to Convert
New photos can earn your listing a second look, but guests still book on price, reviews and the details on the page. If you operate in the Southeast, we'll audit your Airbnb listing against your comp set and show you where you are leaving bookings on the table.
How to Read This Guide
The chart shows Airbnb's published averages, not a forecast for your listing. Your own results depend on your market, your price, your reviews and the quality of the shoot itself.
