Airbnb's AI Is Rewriting Your Listing: What It Gets Wrong and What You Can Turn Off

Airbnb's AI now chooses the cover photo each guest sees, rewrites titles on search cards and writes the highlights at the top of your listing. Most of it has no off switch. Here is every AI touchpoint, the errors hosts are reporting, what you can still control, and how Vrbo and Booking.com compare.

8 of 13 Airbnb AI touchpoints with no host setting
0 Official off switches for AI titles, highlights or cover photos
1 in 10 Amenities one host found wrong after the fall update
~45% Support issues Airbnb's AI resolves with no human

Airbnb now puts an AI layer between your listing and the guest. It chooses which photo leads, rewrites the title on search cards, writes highlights and summaries, and answers guest questions from your listing data. Hosts on forums are flagging what goes wrong: a pool table read as a swimming pool, amenities that appear and vanish, titles that drop the location the host chose. This page maps every AI touchpoint, separates opt-in from forced, and lays out what you can still control, with numbered references in brackets that jump to the full list at the end.

A note before you read further: this briefing is current as of October 14, 2026. Feature descriptions come from Airbnb's newsroom, Help Center and earnings materials. Host reports come from the Airbnb Community Center, AirHostsForum, Reddit and BiggerPockets; they are individual accounts that Airbnb has not verified. Several features launched in the US first. This is not legal advice.

The short version

  • What's forced: AI cover photos, AI titles and descriptions on search cards, personalized highlights, review summaries and AI comparisons. None has an official host off switch.2, 3, 12, 21
  • What's opt-in: Smart Setup for new listings, the AI photo tour, and the dynamic pricing and earnings insights coming later this fall.2, 5, 11
  • The one AI setting you have: "Help improve AI-powered features" in Privacy settings stops your data training Airbnb's models. It does not switch any feature off.3, 26
  • What goes wrong: the AI reads your reviews, photos and the map, not just your text. A review about playing pool got one listing flagged as having a swimming pool.30
  • What you can do: audit your amenities monthly, write so the AI can't misread you, check your listing as a logged-out guest, and keep screenshots.
  • It's industry-wide: Expedia picks hero photos by machine learning, Vrbo began AI cover-photo tests in June 2026, and Booking.com writes every property description. The difference is that Vrbo and Booking.com give hosts a photo opt-out.39, 41, 45, 46, 47

Where Airbnb uses AI on your listing

Eight of the 13 AI touchpoints below have no host setting at all. Airbnb's Help Center confirms it uses AI to choose which amenities and features appear at the top of a listing page.3 In August, Brian Chesky said titles in AI search answers could be AI-generated, with highlights generated in real time for each guest.12

The accuracy rule still points at you. Airbnb's ground rules say a listing must accurately represent all available amenities, and that Airbnb will ask hosts to remove content where AI was used to add amenities a listing doesn't have.4 Airbnb told CBC News the same thing in October.14 It hasn't said how that standard applies to text its own AI writes.

The 13 AI touchpoints in the table above, grouped by what a host can do about each one.

STR Intel's own grouping of the features in Airbnb's 2026 releases and Help Center, plus host reports.1–3, 26 "Unconfirmed" is the amenity edits hosts report, which Airbnb has not acknowledged. "Opt-out" is AI training on your data. Another reader could split the touchpoints differently.

What reputable sources say

Press and research agree on the direction: Airbnb has put an AI layer between the listing and the guest, and hosts have little say in it. Airbnb's own announcements describe guest benefits and never mention host review or opt-outs.

  • Airbnb. The 2026 Summer Release (May 20) added AI review highlights and AI comparison.1 The 2026 fall update (Sep 30) added AI search, AI filters and AI-written descriptions on search cards, US first.2 Neither mentions any host control over AI-written content.
  • TechCrunch. On May 20 it reported that hosts can now enter an address and let AI fill in listing details.11 On August 7 it reported Chesky saying search titles and listing highlights can be AI-generated and personalized per guest.12
  • Skift. Executive editor Dennis Schaal wrote on September 30 that Airbnb is catching up to rivals, but that its AI descriptions and comparisons appear automatically in every search. Chesky has also pledged an agentic AI tool for 2027.13
  • The Host Report. Founder Dom Trovato concluded that hosts no longer control what their listing surfaces. He noted that Chesky's on-stage demo pulled up fireplace photos for a listing whose text never mentioned a fireplace.19
  • CBC News. An October report on misleading AI photos quotes Airbnb: it may ask hosts to remove AI content that adds amenities a listing lacks. The same standard has not been publicly applied to Airbnb's own AI text.14
  • Peer-reviewed research. A 2026 study in Current Issues in Tourism, "From autonomy to algorithm," analyzed host forum discussions. Hosts reported wrong AI highlights and categories, such as promoting free parking where all parking is free, or placing rural homes under "Top Cities." They also described overridden cover photos and automated support loops they could not escape.17
  • Open question. As of early October, neither Airbnb's newsroom nor its host resources say whether hosts can correct an AI-written description.22–24

What hosts are reporting

The errors follow a pattern: Airbnb's AI reads your photos, your reviews and the map, not just what you wrote. So a word in a guest review, an object in a photo or a landmark on a map can become a selling point you never claimed.

Pool table → “pool” One host's listing was flagged as having a swimming pool because a guest review mentioned playing pool. The same listing was also moved to "lake front."30 In our study of 9,577 Southeast listings, a pool was the one title amenity tied to a clear rate premium, so a false pool claim attracts guests on exactly the feature they pay extra for.50
WhenWhereWhat the host reported
Oct 12, 2026AirHostsForum26A week after fixing them, a fresh batch of errors: first aid, kitchen and smoke alarms removed; ski-in/ski-out, hot tub, kayaks and gated community added. It happened even with the AI data-privacy setting off.
Oct 10–11, 2026AirHostsForum26A search card showed an Airbnb-written name made of bare facts in place of the host's title. Another host's kitchenette photo and description, listed for 10 years, had vanished.
Oct 5, 2026AirHostsForum26Roughly one in ten amenities wrong, some added and some removed, all fixed by hand.
Sep 2026Airbnb Community29A Miami host's AI title dropped "Wynwood, Miami Beach" for the little-known El Portal. Another host's AI summary still promoted kayaking after they switched to winter content.
Jul–Sep 2026Airbnb Community28AI titles that were gibberish or over the character limit, and one pushing "two fireplaces." A highlight claimed a 15-minute walk to a lake that has been dry for years; another encouraged trespassing.
Jul 2026Airbnb Community34The AI picked a utility room as the cover photo for a 4-acre mountain property.
Jul 2026Airbnb Community33A cover-photo toggle exists for some hosts but not others, and the AI can revert even when it's off. Turning off the AI data-privacy setting didn't help.
Jun 2026Airbnb Community32Support told a host that AI may choose search photos and hosts can't turn this off. The host linked June cancellations to the swap.
Feb 2026Reddit, r/airbnb38A host said Airbnb, on its own, relabeled a jetted bathtub as a hot tub.
Early 2026Airbnb Community30Pool table → pool. Listing flagged as having a swimming pool because a guest review mentioned playing pool.
2025–26Airbnb Community31A Superhost got their photos restored, but support called it a one-time exception with no opt-out.

Room counts. We found no confirmed report of AI inventing bedroom counts. The "X bedrooms · Y beds · Z baths" line is generated automatically from your room-by-room setup, and errors there usually trace to rooms missing bed details or photos.35

How to turn it off, and what to do when you can't

There is no single switch on Airbnb. You can opt out of AI training on your data and avoid the opt-in tools. For everything else, you control the inputs the AI reads.

FeatureOff switch?What to do
AI training on your dataYesMenu → Account settings → Privacy. Under Data privacy, untick "Help improve AI-powered features."3 This only limits training. It doesn't stop AI titles, highlights or cover photos.
Cover photoNo official switchCheck your Photos section for a photo-optimization toggle and turn it off if you have one; we couldn't find it in Airbnb's Help Center.21 Otherwise, delete the photo the AI uses, set your cover, re-add the photo and re-check weekly.31 Make all of your first five photos strong, since the AI picks among them.
AI titles and search-card descriptionsNoHosts report the AI draws mainly on the first "Listing description" paragraph. Lead it with the location and feature you want surfaced, and make your title, description and amenities say the same thing.28
Listing highlights, Ask About This HomeNoRemove wording the AI could misread: write "billiards table" rather than "pool table," and say "no swimming pool" if guests might assume one. Caption your photos. Report wrong highlights to support with screenshots.
AmenitiesYou own the listAudit both ways each month: untick what you don't have, tick what you do. Save each change and confirm it stuck.26
CategoriesNoHosts report the cover photo drives category placement, so a better cover can move you. Ask support if your placement is wrong.27
Smart Setup, dynamic pricingYes (opt-in)Don't use them, or review every AI-filled field before you publish.

Protect yourself

  1. Look at your listing as a guest. Use a private browser window, logged out, after every Airbnb release and at least monthly. The host dashboard still shows your own cover photo and title, not what guests see.28, 32
  2. Keep screenshots. Save what guests see and your support chats. Hosts advise using them to contest refund deductions when a guest relied on AI text you didn't write.28
  3. Point guests to your own words. Some hosts add a line asking guests to rely on the description and amenities list. Its effect on disputes is untested.28
  4. File feedback. Report each error to support and post on the Airbnb Community Center, so the product team sees the volume.

AI across the rest of the booking journey

Beyond your listing page, AI now runs at every stage from search to support. Chesky told investors in August that Airbnb had been rebuilt as an AI-native company.15 The clearest number: nearly 45% of issues that start with Airbnb's AI assistant now end without a human agent.10

Airbnb's AI Assistant Is Closing More Cases Alone

Share of support issues that start with Airbnb's AI assistant and are resolved without a human agent, by quarter.

Airbnb reported "about a third" for Q4 2025,9 40% for Q1 202615 and "nearly 45%" for Q2 2026.10 These are company-reported figures, not independently audited, and resolution rate says nothing on its own about answer quality.

It's industry-wide: Vrbo, Expedia and Booking.com

Every major platform now lets AI choose photos or write listing text. Airbnb stands out for giving hosts the fewest controls: Vrbo and Booking.com each have a photo opt-out.

Skift notes that Priceline and Kayak shipped natural-language search before Airbnb, Priceline as early as 2023.13 One host on AirHostsForum said they were still fighting Vrbo over AI changes hosts can't override.26

Why this matters for hosts on more than one channel: AI-curated listings are now the norm across OTAs, so the defense is the same everywhere. Keep your structured data accurate, keep your top photos uniformly strong, and check every channel as a logged-out guest. Turn on the opt-outs that exist: Vrbo's AI photo form and Booking.com's Smart ordering toggle.

Coming up

  • Later this fall: dynamic pricing, AI earnings insights, a multi-listing calendar and 3D floor plans for hosts.2, 20
  • Later this year: AI voice support for guests who call Airbnb.1, 12
  • No date yet: AI search, AI descriptions and AI comparison reaching markets outside the US. Airbnb hasn't said when, or whether hosts will be able to correct an AI-written description.22, 23
  • 2027: the agentic AI tool Chesky has pledged.13

Frequently asked questions

Is Airbnb using AI to change my listing?

Yes. Airbnb's AI chooses which of your first five photos each guest sees as the cover, can show an AI-written title and description on search cards, and writes personalized highlights, review summaries and comparisons. Your own title still appears once a guest opens the listing. Hosts have also reported amenities being added and removed, which Airbnb hasn't acknowledged.

Can I turn off Airbnb's AI cover photo, titles or highlights?

There is no official switch. Some hosts report a photo-optimization toggle in the Photos section, but support has told others the AI cover photo can't be turned off. The "Help improve AI-powered features" privacy setting only stops your data training Airbnb's models. What you can control are the inputs: your amenities, your description wording and your first five photos.

Why does Airbnb's AI say my listing has a pool or hot tub it doesn't have?

The AI reads your reviews, photos and the map, not only what you wrote. One listing was flagged as having a swimming pool because a guest review mentioned playing pool, and another host found a jetted bathtub relabeled as a hot tub. Fix your amenity list, reword anything ambiguous, and report wrong highlights to support with screenshots.

Am I responsible if a guest books based on something Airbnb's AI wrote?

Airbnb's rules put listing accuracy on the host and haven't addressed text written by Airbnb's own AI. Keep screenshots of what guests see and of your support chats; hosts advise using them to contest refund deductions. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do Vrbo and Booking.com do the same thing?

Yes. Vrbo began testing AI-chosen cover photos in June 2026, Expedia picks hero images by machine learning, and Booking.com auto-generates every property description and orders photos by machine learning by default. Unlike Airbnb, Vrbo offers an opt-out form for its photo AI and Booking.com lets you switch off Smart ordering.
